Lawmakers chose to keep Kang in the role at a Thursday luncheon instead of electing a successor

Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Kang Jun-hyeon will continue to lead Deominjae, the party's caucus of second-term lawmakers. Although a new chair had been expected to be chosen, members rallied behind Kang at a Thursday luncheon and re-nominated him for the role.
"At a luncheon with the second-term lawmakers, we decided I would stay on," Kang said in a phone interview Thursday. "Re-elected on Thursday — I plan to map out a solid agenda going forward."
Deominjae brings together all of the Democratic Party's second-term Assembly members. Kang has served as its chair, gathering members' views and acting as a liaison with party leadership.
Kang had earlier signaled his intention to step down, and Deominjae had planned to select a successor by acclamation at Thursday's luncheon. The lawmakers present urged him to remain in the post, however, and he was re-nominated by consensus.
Kang represents the Sejong B constituency and is a second-term lawmaker who served as Sejong City's political affairs deputy mayor before entering the 21st National Assembly in 2020 and winning re-election in the 2024 general election. He has served as chair of the Democratic Party's Sejong City chapter and as the party's chief spokesperson. In the 22nd National Assembly, he leads his party's side on the National Policy Committee.
Deominjae was launched in February last year with the goal of achieving a change of government following the Dec. 3 emergency martial law declaration. Since the inauguration of the Lee Jae Myung administration, the group has worked to support the government and ruling party's policy agenda and to amplify second-term lawmakers' voices on internal party matters.
