Selected through a Seoul Metropolitan Government competition, the project will receive up to 2 billion won in funding through 2028, with plans to develop nighttime scenery, specialized content and amenity improvements as part of the Sangbong Food Alley Moonlight Night Market
Jungnang-gu announced Monday that Sangbong Food Alley in Sangbong-dong has been selected as a final recipient of the Seoul Metropolitan Government's "2026 Seoul Moonlight Night Market Development Project" competition.
The Seoul Moonlight Night Market Development Project aims to cultivate distinctive neighborhood night markets as key hubs of the nighttime economy, revitalize alley commerce, and create safe and attractive nighttime commercial districts built on cooperation between residents and merchants.
Following the selection, Sangbong Food Alley will receive up to 2 billion won ($1.48 million) in project funding through 2028.
With the goal of establishing a nighttime economy hub in Seoul, the district plans to develop the Sangbong Food Alley Moonlight Night Market by pursuing distinctive nighttime landscaping, operating night market-specific events and content, improving safety, sanitation and amenities, linking the area to local history, culture and tourism resources, and strengthening cooperation between residents and merchants.
Sangbong Food Alley is a representative dining destination in northeastern Seoul, with 137 stores currently in operation. It was designated a neighborhood-type shopping street in August 2022, and in April 2023 residents and merchants signed a mutual cooperation agreement. Legal night market operations have continued since May of that year. The alley also features wide sidewalk space and other conditions well suited to outdoor dining.
Jungnang-gu District Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi said the district would "create a nighttime commercial district that brings out the unique character of Sangbong Food Alley and build an environment that residents and visitors can use comfortably." He added that the district would "systematically improve nighttime scenery, content, safety and amenities, and continue to provide the support needed to advance the project."
