Race starts at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at the Amsa-dong Prehistoric Site in Seoul
Course departs from Amsa Greenway and heads along the Han River with no road closures
Gangdong-gu will host the 2026 Gangdong Prehistory Marathon on Sunday at the Amsa-dong Prehistoric Site — Seoul's largest prehistoric ruin — starting at 8:30 a.m.
Organized by the Gangdong-gu Athletics Federation and sponsored by the district, the event is designed to build momentum ahead of the 31st Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival, set for Oct. 16–18, and to raise the profile of the Amsa-dong Prehistoric Site, a representative Neolithic ruin with a 6,000-year history.
This year's race drew about 2,800 registrants, with sign-ups closing in under an hour of opening — reflecting the strong interest the event has generated.
The course follows the same route as last year: an opening ceremony at the Amsa-dong Prehistoric Site, followed by a start on the Amsa Greenway before runners enter the Han River course. No road closures are required, making the race safer and more convenient for participants, while nearby residents can enjoy the event without vehicle detours or other disruptions to their daily routines.
The race offers a range of distances — a half marathon, 10 kilometers and 5 kilometers (running or walking) — with the course extending to Gwangnaru Han River Park and Jamsil Han River Park, giving participants a chance to take in the scenic Han River along the way.
Gangdong-gu District Mayor Lee Su-hee encouraged residents to take part in both events. "The Gangdong Prehistory Marathon has established itself as a race that requires no separate traffic controls, allowing participants to run safely and conveniently while minimizing inconvenience to nearby residents," she said. "I hope you will also visit the 31st Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival, running Oct. 16 through Oct. 18, with your family and friends to create wonderful memories."
