HD Construction Equipment said Wednesday it will supply 45 excavators to the Hong Kong MTR Tung Chung Line extension project, including seven Develon 53-ton large excavators and 38 mid-to-large models ranging from 14 to 36 tons.

The equipment will be deployed in the construction of new stations and about 1.2 kilometers of track extension. Because the site sits on reclaimed coastal land with weak ground conditions, demand for specialized machinery is high, and the company also expects to supply additional ultra-large units in the 80- and 100-ton class.

The order is notable for beating out Chinese equipment makers that competed on price. HD Construction Equipment said the win allowed it to overcome the limitations of a Hong Kong market previously confined largely to small and some mid-size products, achieving both a large-volume order and a broader mix of machine types at the same time.

Including this latest delivery, HD Construction Equipment has sold a total of 75 units in Hong Kong this year — its highest supply volume in the local market over the past five years. The company plans to sell more than 100 units annually in Hong Kong by 2029.

According to the Hong Kong government, the city has been investing about 90 billion Hong Kong dollars ($11.5 billion) annually in public infrastructure, including expanding its public transit network and developing new towns. That figure is set to grow to an average of 120 billion Hong Kong dollars per year as major projects such as the Northern Metropolis — a development linking Hong Kong to mainland China — move into full swing. Construction equipment demand in the market is expected to remain consistently strong as a result.

"We are rebuilding our position in a market where we once held a high share, and securing a large-volume order in that context carries significant meaning," an HD Construction Equipment official said. "Building on this result, we will continue to expand our local sales channels and further strengthen our brand presence."

Meanwhile, HD Construction Equipment has been securing orders in emerging markets with steady construction equipment demand beyond Hong Kong. In June, the company supplied 63 units of mining construction equipment to an open-pit mine in Mongolia.
