Pact covers administrative data, joint research and personnel exchanges
Korea to share innovation experience, support Kazakhstan's OECD bid
The Ministry of Statistics will expand cooperation with Kazakhstan in data and statistics, including the use of AI, big data and administrative data linkage.
The agency plans to share Korea's experience in statistical innovation to help Kazakhstan modernize its statistical systems and prepare for OECD membership.
The Ministry of Statistics signed an MOU on data and statistics cooperation with Kazakhstan's Statistics Committee at the Daejeon Government Complex on Monday. The agreement was designed to translate the growing bilateral relationship — spurred by the Korea-Central Asia Summit — into concrete cooperation in the data and statistics field.
Under the MOU, the two institutions will share cases involving the digitalization of statistical production processes and the use of administrative data, big data and AI. They will also conduct joint research on statistical methodology and emerging trends, and expand personnel and knowledge exchanges through reciprocal training visits, bilateral consultations and seminars.
The Ministry of Statistics intends to transfer to Kazakhstan the innovative practices and best cases it has accumulated domestically in data and statistics. The agency aims to bring Kazakhstan's statistical systems in line with international standards, strengthen the country's statistical capabilities and support its preparations for OECD accession.
"We will support Kazakhstan's statistical modernization by sharing Korea's experience in statistical innovation using new technologies such as administrative data, big data and AI," said Ahn Hyung-jun, head of the Ministry of Statistics.
Maksat Turlukhbayev, chairman of Kazakhstan's Statistics Committee, said his agency holds Korea's experience in developing official statistics in high regard. "We hope this agreement will lead to expanded practical cooperation in data utilization and the development of statistical systems," he said.
The Ministry of Statistics has also signed MOUs with the statistics agencies of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, broadening its data and statistics cooperation network across Central Asia. It is also pursuing an Official Development Assistance project with the Asian Development Bank aimed at strengthening statistical capacity in Central Asian countries.
Building on the latest agreement, the Ministry of Statistics said it will consolidate its statistical cooperation framework with key Central Asian nations and work to spread Korea's experience in data and statistics development across the region.
