Seoul Metro CEO Kim Tae-gyun Proclaims Human Rights Management Charter: 'Practice Respect and Consideration Every Day'

Revised charter enshrines citizen safety and life as top priorities; strengthens protections for employees, citizens and partner firms

Managers receive four-category violence prevention training

Seoul Metro proclaimed a revised Human Rights Management Charter on Wednesday, establishing respect for human rights as a core principle of the organization's operations.

The company held a charter proclamation ceremony with employees in attendance on Wednesday, sharing the intent behind the revised charter and the direction of its human rights management going forward.

The ceremony was organized to encourage all members of the organization to put the value of human rights into practice in their daily work and across the broader organizational culture.

The revised charter enshrines the protection of citizens' safety and lives as the organization's highest value. It also spells out the direction Seoul Metro intends to take in human rights management and sets concrete standards of conduct that employees must uphold in the course of their work.

The event opened with a screening of a human rights management video, followed by a reading and proclamation of the charter, the CEO's signature and remarks, and a commemorative photo.

CEO Kim Tae-gyun and 11 representatives from across the organization read the charter aloud together, reaffirming their commitment to actively upholding human rights in the workplace.

Following the proclamation ceremony, a four-category violence prevention training session was held for managers.

The training covered the definitions and key cases of sexual harassment, sexual violence, prostitution and domestic violence, as well as the role of managers in preventing workplace violence, how to respond when incidents occur, and measures to prevent secondary harm to victims.

Seoul Metro plans to continuously strengthen related systems so that the principles of human rights respect take root in daily work and organizational culture, building on the charter proclamation and prevention training.

The company also plans to improve its human rights impact assessments, human rights education and grievance redress systems, and to continue managing the organization in a way that respects the rights of a broad range of stakeholders — including not only employees but also citizens, partner companies and subsidiaries.

"Human rights management only becomes meaningful when we acknowledge our differences and practice respect and consideration in our daily lives," CEO Kim said. "We will continuously strengthen human rights education and prevention activities so that all employees can build an organizational culture of mutual respect and care."
