Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power's Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant awarded college scholarships Thursday to residents and their children living in the surrounding communities of Yangnam-myeon, Munmudaewang-myeon and Gampo-eup.
The scholarships were established to ease the financial burden of higher education on local residents and support the academic progress of promising students from the area.
Eligible recipients were current university students who had lived continuously in the surrounding area for at least three years. Applications were accepted from July 15 to July 29, with final selections made through a comprehensive review of residency period, academic grades and enrollment status.
This year, 207 students received a combined 238.5 million won ($178,000) in scholarships.
"Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant will continue to pursue a wide range of support initiatives to nurture future local talent and improve the educational environment," said Kwon Won-taek, head of the plant.
