South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected several ballistic missiles fired from the Wonsan area of North Korea into the East Sea starting at around 5:20 a.m. Saturday.
"Our military has strengthened surveillance and alert in preparation for additional launches, while South Korea, the United States and Japan are maintaining full readiness by closely sharing information on North Korea's ballistic missiles," the JCS said.
Earlier, North Korea fired more than 10 short-range ballistic missiles — believed to be 600-millimeter super-large multiple rocket launchers (KN-25) — from the Pyongyang area into the East Sea on Aug. 20, one day before the conclusion of the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise.
