A rifle went missing during a mobilization reserve training exercise at an Army reserve training site in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province.
An Army official said Friday that personnel discovered one rifle was missing while distributing firearms for a live-fire exercise Wednesday. "We found that one rifle was short when issuing weapons for the mobilization reserve live-fire training on Sept. 9," the official said, adding that the military is conducting a physical recount and investigation to determine how the weapon went missing.
The Army has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the disappearance. It has not yet been confirmed whether any ammunition also went missing.
The unit had been conducting a three-day mobilization reserve training exercise that began Tuesday.
Army military police have deployed investigators to the scene to track down the missing rifle and determine how it disappeared.
