The Korea National Park Service said Thursday that rescuers from its Bukhansan National Park office saved a hiker's life by quickly performing CPR and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) after the person lost consciousness on the Uisangbong ridge.

According to the service, a report came in around 9:27 a.m. that day that a hiker had lost consciousness on the ridge, in the section between Gasadangammun and Yongchulbong.

Four rescuers from the Bukhansan National Park rescue team rushed to the scene, arriving about 22 minutes later at around 9:50 a.m. They checked the hiker's condition, administered emergency first aid and CPR using the AED, and controlled the surrounding area while carrying out the rescue.

As a result, the hiker regained consciousness around 10:02 a.m. Rescuers then worked with firefighters who arrived at the scene and airlifted the hiker to a hospital by helicopter at around 10:11 a.m.

"Since initial response is critical in emergencies that occur in mountain areas, the rescue team's swift deployment and well-practiced first aid played a major role in saving a precious life," the Bukhansan National Park office said. "We will continue to strengthen our on-site response capabilities and do our best to ensure visitors can safely enjoy Bukhansan National Park."
