Two actuators unveiled; robotics parts on display

'Hero' products chosen for their tech competitiveness

Hyundai Mobis announced Thursday that it held its "2026 R&D Tech Day," unveiling more than 60 next-generation technologies, including electrification and software-defined vehicle systems. The company also introduced two actuators currently under development for the first time. It laid out its vision to expand its research and development scope from core mobility components to future robotics.

During R&D Tech Day, Hyundai Mobis shares its research and development achievements with major domestic partners and industry officials. Held every two years, this marks the third edition. The event runs through Sept. 18 at the company's technology research center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.

Hyundai Mobis set this year's theme as "expanding from mobility components to future robotics." The exhibition was organized to highlight the connections between technologies, letting visitors tour six core mobility component zones before viewing robotics components. The company plans to unveil two actuators currently under development for the first time.

Among the core components, the user experience zone will focus on hands-on demonstrations. It features cutting-edge infotainment products, including a holographic windshield display and a virtual reality head-up display, both of which won an innovation award at CES earlier this year. The lineup also includes a premium sound system.

Global customer representatives are also expected to visit during Tech Day. They are expected to tour the exhibition hall and the technology research center before discussing technical cooperation, including possible orders.

Hyundai Mobis selects "hero" products with strong R&D competitiveness and grooms them as key items to win future orders. This year's Tech Day features a total of 10 hero products.

One flagship technology is the next-generation battery system for hybrid vehicles. It gives customers flexibility in choosing battery cells, as it is compatible with pouch, prismatic and cylindrical cells. Its cooling method has been optimized to support both liquid and air cooling. A venting valve that releases gas externally in the event of abnormal overheating was also added to enhance safety.

In the electronics segment, an integrated controller that combines autonomous driving and parking functions stands out. Current advanced driver-assistance systems rely on separate controllers — one for driving that senses long-range objects and another for parking that senses short-range objects. Hyundai Mobis has integrated the two to improve convenience and safety. The company said the system is particularly effective at protecting pedestrians during low-speed driving or in parking mode.

Among chassis and safety components, a next-generation airbag designed to protect rear-facing passengers was selected as a hero product. Fully autonomous mobility vehicles can be configured with first- and second-row seats facing each other, and this safety device is meant to protect first-row passengers from rear-impact collisions. As demand for PBVs grows, the airbag has been recognized for its creative approach to passenger safety.

Other hero products include a suspension system that reduces the turning radius, allowing U-turns within the width of two lanes. Also selected were a four-wheel independent steering system capable of high-speed driving and a fire-resistant material that blocks heat transfer and withstands high temperatures. A new manufacturing process that boosts the output of electric vehicle motors was also chosen.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Mobis is actively expanding its business portfolio. Following its battery system assembly plants in the Czech Republic and Spain, the company recently began operations at its third electrification production base in Europe, located in Slovakia. It is accelerating efforts to build a supply chain targeting global automakers.
