Post offices may also host CU stores in unused space
BGF Retail, which operates the CU convenience store chain, said Thursday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korea Post Head Office to expand convenience store parcel delivery services and strengthen cooperation between the two organizations.
The agreement covers offering Korea Post parcel delivery through CU stores, opening CU outlets inside post office branches, and running summer heat shelters for postal workers. It also includes providing partnership benefits for employees of both organizations. The two sides also plan to open CU stores in unused space within some 3,300 post office branches nationwide.
BGF Retail has been offering its "CU pickup delivery" service through Korea Post's parcel network since May. Under the new agreement, customers will be able to send Korea Post parcels from any of CU's roughly 18,900 stores nationwide. The companies also plan to offer discounted international parcel delivery services.
The partnership will also expand welfare and benefits for Korea Post employees. BGF Retail piloted summer heat shelters for postal carriers at its directly operated stores starting in July and plans to expand the program to franchise stores next year. Starting in the third quarter, Korea Post employees will be able to use their welfare points at CU stores, and in the fourth quarter, they will receive in-store discounts through the Pocket CU app after verifying their employee status.
"CU and Korea Post, both of which have a presence spread like capillaries across every corner of the country, can create mutual synergy and offer a wide range of services closely tied to everyday life that make things more convenient for customers," said Min Seung-bae, CEO of BGF Retail.
