Yu Jin-seon, founder of Daekyung University and chairman of the Jungam Educational Foundation, has been appointed as a director of World Taekwondo (WT).
Daekyung University said Wednesday that Yu was appointed as a new director at the "2026 World Taekwondo Council" meeting, held that day at WT's conference room.
His four-year term runs through Sept. 7, 2030.
World Taekwondo is the international sports federation that oversees Olympic and Paralympic taekwondo events, drawing on more than 200 member national associations.
Yu is expected to help shape key policies for global taekwondo, discuss international competitions and midterm to long-term development plans. He will also work to expand international sports exchange, taekwondo education and the training of global specialists in the sport.
Since establishing the taekwondo department at Daekyung University, Yu has focused on education and international exchange aimed at developing taekwondo beyond a competitive sport into cultural content that represents Korea.
Daekyung University also runs field-based taekwondo education programs, including sparring, poomsae and demonstrations, as well as training for overseas instructors and coaches. Through participation in domestic and international competitions and international exchange programs, the university is also working to help students go abroad and to nurture the next generation of global instructors.
"Taekwondo is a sport that represents Korea and also a cultural asset shared by people around the world," Yu said. "As a director of World Taekwondo, I will do everything I can toward the sustainable development and globalization of taekwondo, and toward nurturing the next generation of global taekwondo professionals."
