"Our passengers' safety comes first."
The Gwangju Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corp. has partnered with the Korea Elevator Safety Agency to pilot an AI-based elevator safety management system at the elevators of Sangmu Station on urban railway Line 1. The project is also expected to serve as a real-world test bed for AI technology, an industry Gwangju is cultivating as a future growth engine.
This marks the first time such a system has been introduced within the planned Gwangju-South Jeolla integrated special city region. The system uses AI to analyze closed-circuit TV footage from inside the elevators in real time, detecting abnormal situations such as a passenger collapsing. When it spots a sign of trouble inside an elevator, it immediately alerts the operator.
Previously, such incidents were caught only through routine patrol checks or passenger reports. With the AI system in place, operators can respond swiftly the moment an accident occurs, allowing them to guard against potential mishaps.
The corporation plans to analyze the results of the pilot run and consider expanding the system to other elevators.
