Former Danish Queen Margrethe II, 86, has been hospitalized with a blood clot and other symptoms, according to the Norwegian royal family.

The former queen has been hospitalized several times recently.

According to Danish news agency Ritzau, the Norwegian royal household issued a statement saying Margrethe II was admitted to a university hospital in Copenhagen on Sunday (local time) with a blood clot near her hip and mild dehydration.

The royal family said her condition is relatively stable, but she will remain in hospital for observation and further tests.

As a result, Margrethe II will not be able to attend the state funeral of the late Norwegian King Harald V, scheduled for Wednesday, the royal family added.

Harald V died on Aug. 28. The state funeral will be held in Oslo and is expected to draw royal families from across Europe, including those of Britain, Sweden, the Netherlands and Belgium.

Margrethe II sat on the Danish throne for 52 years, becoming the country's first queen since the 1380s. Beloved by the public for modernizing the monarchy, she surprised the nation in 2024 by abdicating and passing the crown to her son, King Frederik X.

Once Europe's longest-reigning monarch

Margrethe II was previously hospitalized in May with chest pain.

At the time, the royal family said she had been admitted to a Copenhagen hospital showing symptoms of angina, according to AFP, Yonhap reported.

She has also required hospital care on a separate occasion for bleeding near the hip following a fall.

After the death of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, Margrethe II became Europe's longest-reigning monarch.

An accomplished designer, Margrethe II received a costume design award at the 2024 Danish Film Awards. She has also been widely recognized for her cultural pursuits — together with her late husband, Prince Henrik, she translated Simone de Beauvoir's existentialist novel "All Men Are Mortal" under a pseudonym.

Until recently, she had consistently appeared at public events, including a banquet marking the 80th birthday of Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf.
