"Culture Flows Through Seongbuk Stream" runs Sept. 11–20 at the Baramswimteo rest area, featuring an outdoor reading space and six nights of waterside busking performances.
Seongbuk-gu in Seoul is transforming Seongbuk Stream into a cultural lifestyle space this fall, following a similar initiative in spring.
The district will run "Culture Flows Through Seongbuk Stream" at the Baramswimteo rest area along the stream from Sept. 11 through Sept. 20.
An outdoor reading space called "Seongbuk Booknic" will open daily from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. throughout the event period, offering seating along the waterside where visitors can pause during a walk to read and relax. Residents of all ages are welcome to enjoy books and leisure in a natural setting.
Street performances under the banner "Mulbit Busking" will be held for six days — Sept. 11–13 and Sept. 18–20 — from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The first three days will take place along the walking path: vocal performances on Sept. 11, dance and magic on Sept. 12, and traditional Korean music and strings on Sept. 13. The final three days move to the waterside stage: jazz on Sept. 18, dance on Sept. 19, and classical music on Sept. 20.
After each performance, a media facade projected onto the outer wall of Donam Cathedral will light up the stream at night. The display will run every evening during the event, adding a new attraction for nighttime strollers.
Seongbuk-gu has designed the program to showcase the stream's changing character throughout the day — daytime reading and relaxation giving way to evening performances and illuminated scenery. The district hopes the initiative will expand residents' access to cultural activities while drawing foot traffic that energizes the surrounding neighborhood.
"Following spring, I hope residents will once again find themselves naturally enjoying culture in their everyday lives along Seongbuk Stream this fall," Seongbuk-gu District Mayor Lee Seung-ro said. "As visits to the stream help invigorate nearby businesses, we will continue building it into a lifestyle cultural space where residents' cultural enjoyment and the vitality of the local commercial district grow together."
