'Puccini Bar Next to Café Verdi' opera drama to perform Sept. 19 at Songpa Culture and Arts Center
Eleven signature arias woven with acting and narration into a single contemporary story
Free admission for all Songpa-gu residents; Naver reservations open first-come, first-served from 11 a.m. Friday
Even audiences unfamiliar with opera will be able to enjoy the masterworks of Verdi and Puccini like a drama unfolding on stage, thanks to a new production coming to Songpa.
Songpa-gu said it will open reservations at 11 a.m. Friday for "Puccini Bar Next to Café Verdi," an opera drama set to perform at 3 p.m. on Sept. 19 at the Songpa Culture and Arts Center.
Hosted by Songpa-gu and organized by the Songpa Cultural Foundation, the production is a so-called "mosaic opera" concert that weaves signature arias by Verdi and Puccini — the two composers who defined Italian opera's golden age — into a single contemporary story.
Rather than recreating the plots of existing operas, the show draws arias from different works and threads them into an entirely new narrative. Vocalists perform in the original languages while acting and narration are layered in, and each piece is given a Korean title that reflects the emotional arc of the characters and the flow of the story.
The stage centers on two neighboring establishments: Puccini BAR, which opens at night, and Café Verdi next door, which starts its day each morning. Bartender Seo Sa-rang and a customer named Kim Seon-taek find their feelings deepening over wine and music, while barista Kim Hyeon-sil and café owner Na Sa-jang each confront the weight of past loves and life's regrets. An elderly gentleman who watches over the alley connects their stories.
The performance follows the characters' emotional journeys across three acts — Act 1, "Night of Love"; Act 2, "Morning of Reality"; and Act 3, "The Alley of Choice" — featuring 11 arias selected from Puccini's "La Bohème," "Turandot" and "Gianni Schicchi," and Verdi's "Rigoletto" and "La Traviata." Beloved audience favorites such as "Nessun dorma," "O mio babbino caro" and "Brindisi" are also included.
The cast features vocalists with careers on domestic and international stages, including sopranos Seo Hwal-ran and Kim Eun-gyeong, tenor Kim Tae-hyeong and baritone Na Eui-seok. Pianist Song Su-mi will provide musical accompaniment, and Lee Gyu-hwa, a former KBS voice actor, will deliver narration to bridge the scenes and music.
"This performance was designed so that audiences can encounter opera's greatest works more easily and warmly, through the vehicle of a story," Songpa-gu District Mayor Seo Gang-seok said. "I hope it becomes an opportunity for residents to experience high-quality culture and arts in their everyday lives and to discover the appeal of classical music anew."
The performance runs 90 minutes beginning at 3 p.m. on Sept. 19 at the Songpa Culture and Arts Center and is free for all Songpa-gu residents. Reservations are available on a first-come, first-served basis through Naver starting at 11 a.m. Friday.
