Pyeongchang-gun, which hosted what many consider the most successful Winter Olympics in history, is bringing an unusual winter Olympic venue to life in late summer.
The event challenges participants to run up the iconic ski jump ramp in reverse, scaling a steep hill course to the finish line.
Pyeongchang-gun, the Pyeongchang Legacy Foundation and Red Bull will hold the Red Bull 400 Pyeongchang — an extreme race up a ski jump ramp with a maximum incline of 38 degrees — at the Alpensia Ski Jumping Center on Saturday.
The Red Bull 400 is an extreme running competition that began in Austria in 2011 and has been held at venues around the world for more than a decade.
Competitors race up the steep ski jump ramp, with a gradient of up to 38 degrees, to reach a finish line at the equivalent height of a 40-story building, competing for the fastest time.
The event uses the ski jump facility, a legacy venue from the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, and was first held in Pyeongchang in 2019 as the first race of its kind in South Korea. Subsequent editions in 2024 and 2025 drew strong interest from athletes across the country.
About 1,500 athletes are expected to compete this year, with races held in individual men's and women's categories as well as four-person relay events in men's and mixed divisions.
Beyond the race itself, the day's program will include a tube slide experience on the ski jump ramp, sports taping sessions and running classes open to both participants and spectators. A local saemaul women's association will also take part, showcasing regional food at the PyeongChang Eats local food market.
