Sixteen honorees recognized with commendations; special performances and community programs spread the message of everyday gender equality across the district
Yongsan-gu in Seoul held a ceremony Wednesday to mark Gender Equality Week (Sept. 1–7) at Yongsan Kkumnamu Community Center.
The event was organized to help residents reflect on the meaning of gender equality and build broader community support for spreading a culture of equality in everyday life.
About 200 people attended, including gender equality honorees, members of women's organizations and local residents. The program was divided into two parts: a formal ceremony and a special performance, along with a range of hands-on activities.
During the ceremony, 16 individuals who contributed to advancing gender equality in the community received commendations in recognition of their efforts and achievements.
A calligraphy performance by artist Kim So-young followed, visually expressing the values of gender equality as part of a pledge segment. Attendees joined together in chanting the slogan: "Equal everyday life, safe lives, Yongsan — a city of charm growing together!"
The second half featured pop soprano Kim Ye-eun and pop opera singer Baek Seong-yeong, who took the stage to convey messages of equality and respect through music and storytelling.
A series of community participation programs ran alongside the main event. Eight organizations and groups, including the Yongsan Family Center, ran booths offering gender equality awareness campaigns, AI caricature photo shoots, eco-bag making workshops, and promotions for women's entrepreneurship and employment opportunities.
"Gender equality is not confined to any single domain — it is a value that must be realized across all aspects of daily life, including employment, education, care and safety," Yongsan-gu District Mayor Kim Kyung-dae said. "We will continue to build an equal community through policies and projects that residents can feel in their everyday lives."
The district will continue related programs throughout the week. The Yongsan Women Leaders Club held a gender equality lecture Wednesday, and a father-child sports day event is scheduled for Saturday at the Yongsan District Culture and Sports Center.
Through Monday, a citizen monitoring team will also conduct inspections of public restrooms and other facilities across the district to check for illegal recording devices.
