Seoul's Jung-gu will build its largest-ever district library in Chungmuro.
The district said it will use a public-contribution facility secured through the Sewoon Redevelopment Promotion District 6-4-22·23 zone development project to create the library. The planned facility will be 3.6 times larger than Gaon Library, the district's current flagship public library.
The library will be built at 108-21 Chungmuro 4-ga, spanning the first through third above-ground floors with a total floor area of 3,469.78 square meters. Located along Toegyero near Chungmuro subway station, it is expected to become a new cultural and educational hub in the heart of the city.
The Sewoon 6-4-22·23 zone will see the construction of a mixed-use residential complex running from eight below-ground floors to 49 above-ground floors, comprising 484 apartment units along with neighborhood commercial facilities, educational and research facilities, and other ancillary uses. Jung-gu will secure the first through third above-ground floors as public space for the library — returning the fruits of an urban renewal project to residents as an everyday cultural resource.
The plan gained momentum after a revised redevelopment promotion plan for the Sewoon 6-4-22·23 zone was conditionally approved by the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Urban Planning Committee redevelopment subcommittee on Friday.
Jung-gu plans to incorporate residents' input as it finalizes the library's layout and operating direction. In addition to reading areas, the district envisions a lounge, workshop spaces and a conference room, aiming to create an open, community-oriented cultural space. The district intends to name the facility "Yi Sun-sin Library" (tentative) and will pursue the necessary procedures with a target groundbreaking in 2028 and completion in 2031.
"The district library we are building will fill a long-standing gap in cultural and educational space in the city center and become a new cultural hub that residents can easily visit in their daily lives," Jung-gu District Mayor Kim Gil-sung said. "We will push ahead without delay to ensure that public resources secured through urban renewal projects are returned to residents as the kind of everyday infrastructure that enriches their lives."
