Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to conduct two-week inspection starting Monday

Checks to include whether workers are paid at least once a month on scheduled dates

The government will conduct intensive inspections at 75 port and coastal maintenance construction sites nationwide to check whether subcontract payments and workers' wages are being properly paid ahead of the chuseok holiday.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced Sunday that it will inspect subcontract payment and wage practices at port and coastal maintenance construction sites from Monday through Sept. 11.

The ministry will verify whether prime contractors have properly issued subcontract payment guarantees to subcontractors, and check whether subcontract payments as well as materials and equipment fees have been paid to subcontractors within the deadlines set by relevant regulations.

Inspectors will pay particular attention to whether workers are receiving their wages, confirming that wages are paid at least once a month on scheduled dates in accordance with the Labor Standards Act.

Through the inspections, the ministry aims to encourage timely payments at construction sites ahead of chuseok and support the livelihoods of construction workers.

Kong Du-pyo, director general of the ministry's Port Bureau, said the ministry would "inspect the payment of subcontract fees and workers' wages at port and coastal maintenance construction sites before the chuseok holiday to promote livelihood stability and ensure that construction workers can enjoy a comfortable holiday."
