Guro-gu District Mayor Jang In-hong has announced plans to create large-scale autumn flower gardens and flower-lined paths along Anyangcheon, Dorimcheon and Mokgamcheon, offering residents a scenic retreat along the district's waterways this fall.
The district recently completed seeding two cosmos varieties — hwanghwa cosmos and Big Star cosmos — across 26,000 square meters of riverside land. Tilling, seeding and irrigation work began in late July and will continue in sequence, with cultivation focused on achieving full bloom in time for the Guro G Festival (Sept. 19-20) and the Anyangcheon Light Festival (Sept. 18-30).
The autumn flower gardens will incorporate a stretch completed in late July under a riverside ecological and cultural restoration project, which drew 4.73 billion won ($3.4 million) from the Seoul Metropolitan Government to transform roughly 30,000 square meters of riverbank into a waterside promenade blending flowers and greenery. The district plans to complement the roses and hydrangeas already planted there with the newly seeded cosmos, creating a multi-flower riverside landscape.
Along the heavily trafficked Anyangcheon corridor in particular, the district will install nighttime lighting at Guro Picnic Garden and the ecological flower garden near Sinjeong Bridge, allowing visitors to enjoy a lush floral scene by day and a distinctly different illuminated waterscape after dark.
The district expects the riverside flower gardens and paths to become a signature autumn destination drawing large numbers of visitors.
In addition, from mid-September onward — when visitor numbers are expected to surge — the district will station staff on both weekdays and weekends to maintain a clean and safe environment.
"I hope the autumn flower gardens and flower paths become a place where residents can feel the rhythm of the seasons and find a moment of rest in their daily lives," district mayor Jang said. "We will continue improving the riverside environment so that every resident can enjoy a world-class waterside space with confidence."
