People Power Party Rep. Jeong Hui-yong, who represents Goryeong-gun, Seongju-gun and Chilgok-gun in North Gyeongsang Province, led a flood recovery effort Sunday in Sanyang-eup, Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province, alongside party chapter members from his three constituencies.
Heavy rain battered southern regions from Aug. 15 through Aug. 17, leaving Tongyeong in urgent need of recovery work.
Jeong joined the cleanup to help residents return to their normal lives as quickly as possible.
About 120 people took part in the effort, including Jeong, provincial and county council members, steering committee members, standing committee members, volunteer corps and party members from Goryeong-gun, Seongju-gun and Chilgok-gun. They focused on clearing sediment and sorting through damaged belongings around Hwayangbungyo, a branch campus of Sanyang Elementary School in Sanyang-eup, which was among the flood-hit areas.
Party chapter officials deployed an excavator and a high-pressure washing vehicle to support the recovery work on site.
"We came out to be a source of strength for the residents of Tongyeong who suffered from the flooding," Jeong said. "We will put in place institutional safeguards to prevent repeated disaster damage and actively coordinate with the central government as well."
