A man in his 50s has been arrested on charges of assaulting a fellow participant at the ongoing "ballot-box blockade" protest near the handball gymnasium at Olympic Park in Songpa-gu, Seoul.
According to the Seoul Songpa Police Station, officers arrested the man, identified only as A, at the protest site near the handball gymnasium at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday on charges of assault caught in the act.
A allegedly assaulted another protester during a dispute that broke out at the scene.
Video footage believed to show the incident spread on social media, with clips appearing to show A grabbing another participant by the back of the neck and dragging him away.
Police are questioning A and others present at the scene to determine the exact sequence of events and the circumstances that led to the assault.
As of Aug. 10, police had opened investigations into 122 cases involving 324 individuals in connection with incidents at the protest site. Of those, 64 cases involving 98 individuals have been closed, while the remaining 58 cases involving 226 individuals remain under investigation.
Of the 101 cases involving assault, public intimidation, insults and other offenses among protesters, 52 have been closed and 49 remain active.
