HJ Shipbuilding & Construction has signed a contract worth 174 billion won ($124 million) for Package 4 of the second Gyeongchun National Highway project, adding another major public-works award to a recent string that includes the Jecheon-Yeongwol expressway and Busan's Bexco third exhibition hall.

The company's construction division announced Thursday that it had concluded the deal for Package 4 of the National Route 46 Namyangju–Chuncheon (Second Gyeongchun National Highway) Road Construction Project, issued by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Wonju Regional Land Management Office.

Package 4 covers a 5.16-kilometer stretch connecting Hasaek-ri in Gapyeong-eup, Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi Province, to Seocheon-ri in Namsan-myeon, Chuncheon, Gangwon Province. The new road will be 19.5 meters wide and will include six bridges totaling 2,697 meters and one tunnel measuring 289 meters. The contract is valued at 174 billion won, with a construction period of 84 months from the ground-breaking date.

The project was awarded through a comprehensive evaluation tender system that assesses both construction capability and price. HJ Shipbuilding & Construction secured the contract as the lead member of a consortium, holding a 60 percent stake.

The company said it gained a competitive edge in the construction-capability assessment through its experience in road, bridge and tunnel work, as well as construction methods designed to minimize environmental impact.

The win is the latest in a recent run of public-sector contracts. HJ Shipbuilding & Construction has successively secured Package 3 of the Jecheon–Yeongwol National Expressway construction project and the Bexco Third Exhibition Hall development in Busan, expanding its portfolio across both civil infrastructure and large-scale building work.

"We plan to concentrate our road construction expertise on this second Gyeongchun National Highway project," a company official said. "We will do our best to achieve a zero-accident record through rigorous on-site safety management and to deliver highly reliable infrastructure."
