SpaceX approached AI coding startup Cognition AI about a potential acquisition but was turned down, Bloomberg reported Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

However, discussions are continuing on possible cooperation, including arrangements for Cognition to use SpaceX's computing capacity, the sources said.

Cognition CEO Scott Wu rebuffed the report on social media platform X, writing: "We are not for sale, and we have never had that conversation."

Founded in 2023, Cognition is best known for its AI agent Devin, designed to automate software engineering tasks. The company has partnerships with major corporations including Mercedes-Benz Group and GE Aerospace.

Cognition was valued at $26 billion in a funding round in May. The company is now in early discussions for a new investment round at a valuation of at least $40 billion, according to sources.

The report came just days after SpaceX completed its acquisition of AI vibe-coding startup Cursor at a valuation of $60 billion.

SpaceX's AI division is widely considered to lag behind rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
