"I had no idea we were consuming this much."

Just 42 days. That is how long it takes South Korea to exhaust all the natural resources it should be spreading across an entire year. In calendar terms, the country has been living on ecological "debt" for roughly 11 months since Feb. 11.

South Korea is classified as an ecological "deficit nation" — though the resources in question are not money or food in the conventional sense. They refer to the country's own regenerative capacity: the ecological resources its land and seas can naturally produce.

That capacity encompasses the resources South Korea's oceans, forests and other ecosystems can generate over a year, as well as the country's ability to absorb the carbon it emits — in short, nature's total productive power within its borders.

South Koreans are consuming well beyond what their own natural environment can sustain.

The scale of that overshoot surpasses even major advanced economies with larger GDPs. If the entire world consumed at South Korea's rate, analysts estimate at least four Earths would be needed to meet the demand.

According to an analysis by the Global Footprint Network, an international environmental organization, South Korea's "Country Overshoot Day" this year fell on Feb. 11 — the eighth earliest among 195 countries and the earliest of any G20 nation.

A country's overshoot day measures how its domestic regenerative capacity stacks up against its population's consumption. The key metric is whether a nation has enough ecological space to produce the food, timber, fish and other resources its people consume, and to absorb the carbon dioxide and other waste generated by fossil fuel use.

In plain terms, at South Korea's current rate of consumption, the country exhausts everything its natural environment can regenerate in a full year by Feb. 11.

The early overshoot is not simply a product of high consumption in absolute terms — many countries post stronger economic indicators, including GDP, than South Korea. The crux is that South Koreans are consuming far beyond what their own natural environment can support.

Comparisons with other major economies make the picture starker. Japan's overshoot day falls on Feb. 26, 15 days later than South Korea's. China reaches its limit on March 13, Italy on March 19. The United Kingdom holds out until April 19, Germany until May 23. The United States does not exhaust its annual ecological budget until July 2, and France until July 17.

Only seven countries reach their overshoot day earlier than South Korea. They are largely desert nations — Israel, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE — along with Singapore and Luxembourg, whose extremely small land areas leave them with very low biological productivity.

South Korea is consuming far more each year than nature can replenish. The shortfall is covered by importing resources from abroad, depleting domestic ecosystems faster than they can recover, and allowing unabsorbed carbon to accumulate in the atmosphere — an ecological debt that keeps growing.

A deeper problem is that the debtor and the creditor are not the same. South Korea's excess consumption can draw down forests, farmland and fisheries in other countries, while unabsorbed carbon accumulates in the atmosphere and accelerates climate change worldwide. The resulting climate disasters tend to inflict the heaviest damage on lower-income nations.

South Korea's relatively small land area compared with the size of its economy does contribute to the ecological deficit. But geography alone does not explain it. South Koreans' per capita carbon emissions, for instance, far outpace those of most other countries.

According to a carbon neutrality implementation report by the McKinsey Global Institute, South Korea's annual per capita carbon dioxide emissions stand at around 15.5 metric tons — more than double the global average of 7.3 metric tons. Some analysts warn that South Korea could rank among the world's highest per capita CO2 emitters.

Looking at consumption levels alone, separate data compiled by the GFN puts South Korea's "national consumption overshoot day" at April 9 this year. If every person on Earth consumed at the same rate as South Koreans, the planet's entire annual regenerative capacity would be exhausted in just three months.

If the entire world lived like South Koreans, roughly 3.7 Earths would be needed to sustain that lifestyle — a higher figure than for Japan, China or major European nations. The equivalent figure for Japan is 2.7 Earths, Germany 2.8, the United Kingdom 2.6 and China 2.5.

South Korea faces a double deficit: its domestic ecological capacity is insufficient, and its consumption level far exceeds what a single planet can support. Yet efforts to reverse the trend through policy have been widely criticized as inadequate, prompting calls for more substantive action, including accelerating cuts in carbon emissions.

Some analysts warn that the ecological deficit poses risks beyond the environment, potentially increasing national vulnerability through supply chain disruptions and rising resource prices.

Mathis Wackernagel, co-founder of the GFN, said of a country's overshoot day: "Past this point, a country lives by importing resources from abroad, liquidating its own natural capital, or dumping waste such as carbon dioxide into the global commons." He added that nations running persistent ecological deficits "may become more vulnerable to supply disruptions and rising resource prices."

Beyond South Korea, the planet as a whole is already in deficit. The GFN announced in June that this year's Earth Overshoot Day — the date by which humanity has used up nature's annual budget for the entire globe — falls on July 30. That means the world burned through a full year's worth of ecological resources in roughly seven months, and there is no sign of improvement. This year's Earth Overshoot Day is the earliest ever recorded.
