Harvard University has invested in SpaceX, the aerospace and AI company led by Elon Musk.

Harvard Management Company, which oversees the university's endowment, disclosed in a quarterly filing that it holds 12,935,100 shares of SpaceX, according to Fox News and other outlets Sunday.

The stake was valued at $2.2 billion as of June 30. Accounting for a subsequent decline in SpaceX's share price, the current holding is estimated at around $1.8 billion.

It remains unclear when Harvard acquired the SpaceX stake or at what price.

Harvard Management Company is required to report its listed equity holdings to the SEC within 45 days of the end of each quarter.

Because SpaceX went public on June 12, its shares were not included in earlier quarterly filings covering the period when it was still a private company.

SpaceX represents the largest share of Harvard's equity portfolio. The university holds $4.3 billion in stocks in total, including positions in TSMC and Cerebras, and has also invested in cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin and in precious metals.

The investment is particularly striking given the strained relationship between the two sides, as Musk has publicly criticized Harvard on multiple occasions in recent years.

In December 2023, then-Harvard President Claudine Gay gave a tepid response to questions about antisemitism on campus before a House education committee hearing. Musk responded by declaring that cutting off funding to Harvard was "the only way."

Gay ultimately stepped down amid backlash from Jewish groups and a series of controversies.

Musk also signaled agreement with critics of Harvard's DEI — diversity, equity and inclusion — admissions and hiring policies by reposting content that condemned them.
