Seoul's Gangdong-gu announced Tuesday it will launch the Red Circle Campaign to help residents prevent cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease.
The campaign encourages residents to monitor their blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels to ward off serious conditions. The red circle symbolizes healthy blood vessels. Conditions such as hypertension and diabetes are often hard to detect in daily life, but left unmanaged they can progress to severe cardiovascular events including stroke and myocardial infarction. The campaign is timed to coincide with the KDCA-designated Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Management Week, held annually from Sept. 1 to 7.
On Sept. 2 and 3 at 3 p.m., the district will host free health lectures on the third floor of Gangdong Children's Hall, featuring specialist physicians in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular medicine.
"Knowing your own vascular numbers is the first step in preventing chronic disease, and I hope many residents will take part and come away with useful health information," Gangdong-gu Mayor Lee Su-hee said. "We will continue working to make Gangdong a healthier place for all residents."
