Dongjak-gu announced it has completed a pilot installation of vertical parking lines at public parking lots in the district to improve driver convenience and prevent accidents.
The vertical parking lines are three-dimensional guide markings that extend the longitudinal lines of existing floor bay markings upward along the rear wall or obstacle to a set height.
When reversing into a space, drivers can more easily gauge their position, helping them park correctly and avoid contact with surrounding structures such as walls.
The district completed the pilot installation on Aug. 7 at four public parking facilities — Heukseok Rainwater Pump Station, Dohwa, Bingsugolle Rose and Seogwang — all of which have interior walls or retaining walls at the rear of parking bays.
The vertical lines were installed at no more than 0.7 meters in height on bays equipped with wheel stops, using the same width and color as existing floor markings so drivers can easily identify their parking position. On white walls, however, gray was used instead to improve visibility.
Following the pilot, the district plans to conduct a user satisfaction survey to assess real-world effects, including improved position recognition and accident prevention. It will also review expanding the markings to other wall-adjacent parking areas such as off-street resident-priority lots.
"Even a small change — making parking lines more visible — can make parking noticeably easier and safer," said Ryu Sam-young, Dongjak-gu district mayor. "We will carefully evaluate the results of this pilot and continue improving the parking environment in ways that residents can feel."
