The Donam 1-dong Village Safety Council (chairman Song Dae-ho) and Saemaul Women's Association (chairwoman Kim Hyeong-sun) in Seoul's Seongbuk-gu delivered homemade samgyetang and daily necessities to more than 100 low-income and single-person elderly households struggling through the heat wave.
The "Samgyetang Sharing With Love" event was organized to help elderly residents stay healthy during the prolonged heat wave. Members gathered at the shared kitchen of the Donam 1-dong community center from early morning to cook and package the samgyetang themselves.
The broader community also pitched in. The Donam 1-dong autonomous disaster prevention corps, Seoul Chuk Hospital, Gileum General Social Welfare Center and individual donors contributed daily necessities and joined the effort.
Seongbuk-gu District Mayor Lee Seung-ro visited the scene that day, donning an apron to help with the cooking and packaging.
Song Dae-ho, chairman of the Donam 1-dong Village Safety Council, said he hoped the gesture would offer "a small measure of comfort and encouragement to elderly residents having a difficult summer in the heat," adding that the group would "consistently carry on sharing and caring for the community."
District Mayor Lee said that during prolonged heat waves, "we must pay even closer attention to the health of elderly residents, who are especially vulnerable to heat-related illness," and pledged to "work together with the community to consistently check on their well-being and health, and provide thorough care so they can get through the summer safely."
