2.5 turbo hybrid system delivers 16% more power, 25% better fuel economy

Genesis will equip the GV80 hybrid, set for release next month, with a 2.5 turbo hybrid system producing a combined maximum output of 352 horsepower. Compared with the existing GV80 2.5 turbo, the new powertrain delivers 16% more peak power and 26% more peak torque, while improving fuel efficiency by more than 25%. It also marks the first application of a water-cooled hybrid battery system in the Hyundai Motor Group lineup.

The 2.5 turbo hybrid system uses a parallel architecture combining a starter motor (P1), which handles engine starting and power generation, and a drive motor (P2), which manages propulsion and regenerative braking.

With a combined peak output of 352 PS and a combined maximum torque of 54.0 kgf·m — up roughly 16% and 26%, respectively, over the GV80 2.5 turbo — the GV80 hybrid can accelerate from a standstill to 100 kilometers per hour in about 7.1 seconds, based on the company's own laboratory testing.

Based on in-house measurements using the GV80 19-inch two-wheel-drive five-seat model, combined fuel economy improves by more than 25% compared with the 2.5 turbo variant, enabling more efficient driving.

The 2.5 turbo hybrid system is the first in the Hyundai Motor Group to adopt a water-cooled hybrid battery system. By controlling battery temperature more precisely than an air-cooled setup, the water-cooled system achieves higher maximum discharge output, allowing the battery to be used more aggressively.

The Genesis 2.5 turbo hybrid system expands the range over which the vehicle runs on motor power alone, delivering a quiet ride, linear acceleration and a driving feel comparable to that of an electric vehicle.

To minimize the vibration and noise that can occur when the engine starts from cold after parking, Genesis engineered the system to run in EV mode from the moment the vehicle moves until it reaches approximately 30 kilometers per hour. This allows the vehicle to travel through enclosed spaces such as below-ground parking garages in EV mode, then engage the engine once it joins regular roads and reaches a certain speed, giving customers a quiet and comfortable start to every drive.

Genesis also maximized EV mode availability on city streets with frequent traffic signals and in stop-and-go congestion. In addition, the final gear ratio between the transmission and the wheels was set lower than on the 2.5 turbo model, reducing drivetrain noise.

Genesis also introduced technology that simultaneously reduces torsional and bending vibrations at the engine crankshaft damper pulley, cutting engine noise transmitted into the cabin. A rotational vibration-absorbing damper was added to the new rear-mounted seven-speed transmission, canceling engine rotational vibrations with an opposing phase to further improve interior quietness.

The system also delivers the immediate acceleration response associated with electric vehicles. When a driver presses the accelerator deeply while in EV mode, the system simultaneously controls gear shifting and engine clutch engagement to produce instant acceleration. Based on in-house testing, the GV80 hybrid can re-accelerate 18% faster than the 2.5 gasoline turbo model when the driver presses the accelerator at 100 kilometers per hour.

Genesis also designed the P2 motor to rotate in reverse for backing up, eliminating the reverse gear components from the transmission. This reduces transmission weight and friction while using a higher gear ratio to improve launch acceleration.

Genesis has also packed the 2.5 turbo hybrid system with a range of hybrid-specific features, including Stay Mode, Hybrid Predictive Control and Smart Regenerative Braking.

Stay Mode uses the high-voltage battery to power all in-vehicle convenience functions — including climate control and multimedia — without starting the engine, and can be used while the vehicle is stationary before or after a drive. Hybrid Predictive Control anticipates the route to the destination and road conditions to optimize battery charge levels, encouraging efficient driving modes including EV mode.

Smart Regenerative Braking automatically applies the optimal regenerative braking intensity by analyzing navigation data such as speed camera locations alongside following distance and other factors. This reduces how often the driver needs to operate the brake pedal, lowering driving fatigue, while increasing battery charge through regenerative braking to improve fuel economy.

Meanwhile, Genesis also unveiled the design of the GV80 hybrid Thursday. The model features a newly designed exterior grille and wheels, while the interior gains four new two-tone color options and two real wood garnish variants.

"The new powertrain is expected to deliver a differentiated driving experience by precisely balancing efficiency, quietness and performance," said Lee Si-hyeok, executive vice president and head of the Genesis business division. "Starting with the GV80 hybrid, we will proactively respond to changes in the market environment and customer needs, while conveying Genesis's unique sensibility and philosophy through new technology."
