Singer Kim Jong-kook has revealed he is a shareholder who accidentally bought Samsung Electronics near its bottom.
Stock expert Choi Go-minsu and macroeconomics expert Oh Geon-yeong are set to appear on KBS 2TV's "Okdapbang ui Munjeadeul," a quiz and talk show airing Friday, to offer personal finance tips for retail investors.
During a recent recording, host Yang Se-chan drew attention when he told the visiting experts, "I'm actually a legendary shareholder who bought Samsung Electronics at 60,000 won," adding that he had held the stock even when it was trading at 100,000 won.
Yang then drew laughs when he deflated his own boast, saying, "But I've sold it all now."
Kim then shared his own accidental success story, saying he knew nothing about stocks but had bought Samsung Electronics shares on the advice of people around him, with an average purchase price of around 50,000 won ($35) per share. He added that he had no intention of selling.
The story prompted fellow cast member Joo Woo-jae — a committed cash saver — to jokingly call Kim a "traitor" in a burst of mock outrage that sent the studio into laughter.
Through his encounter with Choi and Oh, who offered sharp investment coaching for retail investors navigating the Kospi 6000 era, Kim found himself at a major crossroads after a lifetime of sticking to 2 percent bank interest. He was particularly wide-eyed at a strategy Choi revealed, known as the "4-4-2 method," exclaiming, "I absolutely have to switch — why has nobody told me about this until now?"
