A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck 39 kilometers south-southwest of Kumamoto city in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, at 1:05 p.m. Wednesday (Korean Standard Time), the Korea Meteorological Administration said, citing foreign monitoring agencies.

The epicenter was located at 32.50 degrees north latitude and 130.50 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
