'Immersive fire-safety city' project earns top marks in Ministry of Land assessment; AI-driven administration draws praise
Daejeon has been named the top-performing institution in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's national geospatial policy implementation assessment, the city announced Wednesday. It is the second consecutive year Daejeon has received the honor, following its first selection in 2025.
The ministry conducted the assessment to evaluate how central government agencies and local governments across the country carried out geospatial-related projects in 2025.
Daejeon earned high marks particularly for its inter-municipal cooperative project to build an immersive fire-safety city using convergent data.
The city has been at the forefront of national geospatial development by proactively applying digital twin technology to urban safety areas, including fire department operations and below-ground facility management.
Last year's top-rated project — a digital twin-based integrated safety management system for underground facilities — scored highly for its extended reality (XR)-based monitoring, AI-driven predictive maintenance, and road excavation simulation technology.
This year's top-rated project, the immersive fire-safety city initiative using convergent data, received high marks for building precise 3D data across all of Seo-gu and Yuseong-gu, as well as for developing digital twin fire-safety training content, an indoor navigation system for locating people inside buildings, and radio-wave detection sensors to search for people in blind spots during rescue operations. The digital twin-based fire training and indoor navigation technologies — developed for the first time nationwide — were also recognized for their innovation and potential for international adoption.
Choe Jong-su, director of Daejeon's Urban Housing Bureau, said the back-to-back top honors demonstrate that the city is leading AI-driven administration built on digital twin technology, both at home and abroad. "We will continue to expand intelligent urban services that citizens can feel directly — safe and convenient — grounded in precise geospatial data," he said.
