Christopher Nolan's latest film "Odyssey" has become the highest-grossing entry in the director's filmography.

According to Box Office Mojo, "Odyssey" has earned $1.1 billion globally, surpassing Nolan's previous record-holder "The Dark Knight Rises," which took in $1.09 billion.

The film has also been a hit domestically since opening Wednesday, topping the local box office in its first weekend and crossing the 2 million admissions mark within six days of release.

Word of mouth about the film's cinematic experience has been spreading rapidly, sparking fierce competition for tickets at premium formats including IMAX. Resale of premium-screen seats at marked-up prices has also become increasingly common.

"Odyssey" is a blockbuster based on Homer's ancient epic poem "The Odyssey," following the hero Odysseus — who led the Greeks to victory in the Trojan War — on his decade-long journey home to Ithaca as he overcomes trials sent by the gods.
