The Daeseongjeon hall of Yean Hyanggyo, a Confucian school in Seobu-ri, Dosan-myeon, Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, has been designated a national treasure by the Cultural Heritage Administration in recognition of its historical, academic and artistic value.

Andong city said Yean Hyanggyo is believed to have been founded in 1411 and has undergone multiple restorations over the centuries, yet has never been destroyed by fire or relocated — remaining on its original site throughout.

The school's location is considered especially significant because it escaped inundation when Andong Dam was built and much of the former Yean-myeon township area was submerged.

Its spatial layout is also distinctive. While most hyanggyo arrange their lecture and ritual spaces along a single axis, Yean Hyanggyo follows a two-axis structure shaped by the terrain, combining a front-lecture, rear-shrine arrangement with a left-lecture, right-shrine configuration.

The Daeseongjeon, the ritual centerpiece of the complex, underwent restoration beginning in 1569 under Yean county magistrate Son Yeong-je and was completed in 1572. Records in the "Yean Hyanggyo Chronicle" confirm a further restoration in 1723.

Dendrochronological and radiocarbon dating of the hall's major wooden structural members revealed construction traces spanning from the 16th century to the early 18th century, including timbers confirmed to date to 1569.

The analysis confirmed that the hall has retained its scale and form largely unchanged since the 1723 restoration.

The Daeseongjeon is a three-bay-by-three-bay structure with a gabled roof. Its front outer columns are square while the inner columns are round, and the windows on the side bays employ an archaic technique in which the horizontal framing members are concealed from outside view.

Andong city plans to present the official designation certificates for the Daeseongjeon and for Hangnam Gotaek — an Andong residence earlier elevated to the status of national folk cultural heritage — at a ceremony in the mayor's office on Wednesday.

"The Daeseongjeon of Yean Hyanggyo is a cultural heritage site of high architectural significance, with clearly documented construction and restoration dates and distinctive structural composition and archaic techniques preserved intact," a city official said. "We will continue to work closely with the Cultural Heritage Administration to ensure this precious heritage is systematically preserved and passed down."
