First South Chungcheong-Nonsan defense innovation cluster regional council convenes, laying out AI defense industry roadmap
A roadmap to establish Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province, as a national hub for the defense robot industry has been finalized.
South Chungcheong Province and Nonsan city held the first South Chungcheong-Nonsan Defense Innovation Cluster Regional Council meeting Tuesday at Konyang University in Nonsan.
The regional council is co-chaired by the province's administrative vice governor and the director of the Defense Industry Promotion Bureau at the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), with members drawn from the province, Nonsan city, DAPA and representatives from the private sector, government, industry, academia and research institutions.
At Tuesday's meeting, appointment certificates were presented to 13 council members, and medium- to long-term project plans as well as this year's project plan were reviewed and approved.
The South Chungcheong-Nonsan Defense Innovation Cluster project is a five-year initiative running from this year through 2030, under which the province, Nonsan city and DAPA will jointly invest 49.9 billion won ($35.1 million) — 24.5 billion won in national funds and 25.4 billion won in local funds — to build an AI defense robot industry ecosystem in Nonsan.
Key initiatives include establishing and operating a specialized AI defense robot technology research institute; supporting rapid demonstration and pilot development of AI defense robots; training field specialists tailored to the AI defense robot industry; identifying and nurturing AI defense robot startups; building equipment for reliability evaluation and software quality and safety verification of AI defense robots; developing domestic and overseas markets and expanding into global markets; and drawing up a master plan for South Chungcheong-specific defense technology development.
Following its selection through a public competition in June, the province plans to move forward in earnest with the project plan approved at Tuesday's council meeting, centering on a project team formed in partnership with Nonsan city and DAPA.
The convening of the regional council marks the formal activation of a civilian-government-industry-academia-research cooperation framework to drive the successful implementation of the South Chungcheong-Nonsan Defense Innovation Cluster project.
By building a collaborative network that brings together diverse stakeholders — including local universities, research institutions and defense companies — centered on the province, Nonsan city and DAPA, officials expect to consolidate capabilities and expertise previously dispersed across individual organizations and lay the groundwork for a coordinated push to develop the defense robot industry.
"The regional council launched today will serve as the driving force to develop the province and Nonsan into a key hub for South Korea's AI defense robot industry," administrative Vice Governor Hong Jong-wan said. "We will strengthen cooperation among relevant agencies and push forward with the project in a substantive manner."
