A scientific effort to analyze the Geum River estuary — where the river meets the sea — and find solutions to environmental problems along the Yellow Sea coast is now underway. The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) has established its first research base in the Yellow Sea region in Seocheon-gun, South Chungcheong Province, and plans to expand coastal research starting with the Geum River estuary.

KIOST announced Monday that it held a launch ceremony for the Yellow Sea Research Institute pilot unit and a policy forum at the biotech-specialized knowledge industry center in Seocheon-gun, South Chungcheong Province.

The pilot unit will conduct research reflecting local needs and propose science-based solutions to regional issues, laying the groundwork for the eventual establishment of a full Yellow Sea Research Institute.

The Geum River estuary is the unit's first research focus. Since a tidal barrage was built there in 1990, the area has seen consistently deteriorating water quality and declining populations of migratory fish, prompting ongoing calls for ecosystem restoration.

The Geum River is a critical water source, supplying 600 million tons of water annually to surrounding areas. Finding an approach that satisfies both ecosystem restoration and a stable water supply remains a key challenge.

Over the next 30 months, the pilot unit will conduct a comprehensive investigation into how seawater circulation through the Geum River tidal barrage affects the coastal environment. Researchers will analyze changes in sediment conditions, topography, current velocity and flow volume in the estuary and along the Yellow Sea coast, as well as the ecological impact of shifting sediment conditions.

The unit will also investigate the causes of declining laver productivity and quality at nearby aquaculture farms and develop countermeasures. The findings are expected to be applicable not only to the Geum River estuary but also to the management of other Yellow Sea estuaries and coastlines.

"The research results from the Geum River estuary will serve as a key to understanding the entire Yellow Sea, as they can be applied to other estuaries and coastlines facing similar challenges," KIOST President Lee Hee-seung said. "We will work with local communities to ensure that the research starting in Seocheon-gun can scientifically diagnose issues along the Yellow Sea coast and become a hub for marine science and technology in the region."
