An 18-year-old accused of stabbing his mother to death during an argument faced a detention hearing Sunday as a court weighed whether to issue an arrest warrant.
The suspect, identified only as A, appeared at the Incheon District Court on Sunday afternoon for the pre-arrest detention hearing on charges including matricide.
Stepping out of a police van with his hands bound in rope and wrapped in bandages, A had covered most of his face with a hat and mask.
He said nothing when reporters asked why the argument had occurred and whether he felt sorry for his mother. He also remained silent when asked what conflict had led to the incident and why he had turned himself in.
The hearing began at 2 p.m., with a ruling on his detention expected later that afternoon.
A is accused of stabbing his mother, a woman in her 40s identified as B, multiple times with a weapon found inside their apartment in Samsan-dong, Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, at around 8:30 p.m. Friday during an argument.
B was transported to a hospital by emergency responders but was pronounced dead. A's father and younger sibling were not home at the time, police said.
Police had previously responded to the apartment one or two times following reports of arguments between A and B, though no one was booked on those occasions.
"The specific motive involves family matters and cannot be disclosed," a police official said, adding that the National Forensic Service had been asked to conduct an autopsy on B's body.
