Lee Jae-jin, speaker of the Gangnam-gu Council in Seoul, visited Yeoksam Senior House (chairman Park Tae-soon) and Yeoksam Jungang Senior Center (chairman Choi Yun-gi) on Friday to check on elderly residents during the heat wave, delivering watermelons and wishing them a healthy summer.
The visit came amid a prolonged heat wave that has raised concerns about heat-related illness and other health risks. Lee sought to hear directly from residents about any difficulties and to inspect cooling facilities and heat-response measures at each site.
Lee greeted elderly visitors at both facilities, asked whether the extreme heat had caused them any inconvenience and handed out the watermelons he had brought. He also held informal meetings with residents to hear their concerns and suggestions about heat-wave response efforts.
"With an unprecedented heat wave continuing, my biggest concern is the health of our elderly residents," Lee said. "I will keep listening to voices from the community and do everything the council can to ensure that the elderly and other vulnerable groups get through the summer safely and that the support they need is delivered in a timely manner."
