A man in his 50s has been arrested on suspicion of beating an acquaintance dozens of times on a street, leaving the victim in critical condition.

The Asan Police Station in South Chungcheong Province arrested the suspect, identified only as A, on attempted murder charges and is investigating the case, according to Yonhap.

A is accused of punching and kicking a man in his 60s, identified as B, dozens of times in the face and other parts of the body on a street in Oncheon-dong, Asan, on Wednesday.

Bystanders who witnessed the brutal assault called police, who arrived on the scene and took A into custody.

B was transported to a nearby hospital and remains in intensive care.

Police believe A carried out the attack after drinking with B and are investigating the exact circumstances.

"The assault was so severe that we applied attempted murder charges and requested an arrest warrant," a police official said.
