Koo made the remarks during a visit Friday to a low-income single-room housing district in Changsin-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, where he inspected living conditions and heat response measures for vulnerable residents. "Summer is hot for everyone, but it is far harsher for vulnerable groups such as those living in these cramped quarters," he said.

The visit was arranged amid a major heat wave alert and a sustained stretch of intense summer heat to check on the health and living conditions of residents in the district — who are particularly susceptible to extreme heat — and to review the government's heat response efforts.

Koo first visited a community supply center that distributes daily necessities and cooling products to district residents, where he was briefed on its operations. He then inspected the shared air conditioners and mist-based cooling systems installed in the area.

He also called on an elderly resident living alone nearby to check on the person's health and whether they were having any difficulty using cooling facilities, urging them to use shared air conditioners and designated cooling shelters when the heat becomes extreme.

Koo wrapped up his visit at a community welfare center, touring facilities including a cooling shelter and a bathhouse. He expressed gratitude to staff members dedicating themselves to regular welfare checks and the upkeep of shared facilities.
