The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on Friday appointed Nam Young-jun, an emeritus professor at Chung-Ang University, as the new director of the National Library of Korea. His two-year term runs through August 2028.
Nam earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in library and information science from Chung-Ang University and spent more than 30 years as a professor at Jeonju University and Chung-Ang University beginning in 1993, establishing himself as a leading authority in the field.
He also served as president of the Korean Library Association, a member of the Presidential Commission on Library and Information Policy, and chair of the National Information Disclosure Committee, contributing to the development of national knowledge and information policy.
Culture Minister Choi Hwi-young said Nam is "the right person for the role, with academic depth, a thorough understanding of library operations on the ground, and strong policy capabilities." He added that he expects Nam to "strengthen the role of the National Library of Korea as the representative institution of the nation's intellectual life in the age of digital transformation, and to lead innovation and future development in library services across the country."
