Ulleung-gun in North Gyeongsang Province conducted an emergency inspection Tuesday using a fisheries patrol vessel to assess jellyfish activity in local waters, following a series of Nomura's jellyfish sighting reports along the East Sea coast.
The inspection focused on major coastal and nearshore areas. While no mass aggregation was detected, small numbers of Nomura's jellyfish — one to three at a time — were spotted at several points along the shoreline.
Nomura's jellyfish are toxic and can cause skin pain and rashes on contact, prompting authorities to urge beachgoers and water sports enthusiasts to take particular care.
"Only a small number of jellyfish have been confirmed so far, and we believe beach use is not significantly affected," an Ulleung-gun official said. "However, if you spot a jellyfish, please do not approach or touch it, and report it to the relevant authorities immediately."
