The Pohang Federation for Environmental Movement held a press conference at Pohang City Hall on Wednesday, demanding that the city scrap the Homigot Golf & Resort project, which it said would damage the Homi Peninsula through a flawed strategic environmental impact assessment.
The group said an SPC is seeking to change the urban management plan to build an 18-hole golf course and resort on roughly 1.27 million square meters of land in Homigot-myeon, Pohang.
After reviewing the draft strategic environmental impact assessment, the group said that despite the project's eco-friendly claims, only 26 percent of the site would be preserved in its natural state while 45,000 trees would be destroyed.
The group also questioned whether the assessment had adequately examined the ecological significance of the project site and its use by migratory birds. It added that the assessment fell short on reviewing pesticide and fertilizer use, water procurement and the impact on the water environment, and that a project based on such a deficient report could not be considered legitimate.
"The draft strategic environmental impact assessment, which forms the basis for this project, was poorly written from the start," a Pohang Federation for Environmental Movement official said. "Pohang City must cancel the project entirely."
