Ko Ji-yong, a former member of the idol group Sechs Kies, has publicly revealed that he divorced two years ago.
Ko posted on his social media account Wednesday, writing that he had divorced his wife two years ago and that he had kept it private because he "wanted to protect" his son Seung-jae, giving him enough time to accept the situation and grow up in a stable environment.
"The divorce was a decision we made out of mutual respect for each other's paths and to fulfill our responsibilities as adults," he said. He added that Seung-jae now understands the new relationship between his mother and father and is doing well.
Ko said he would continue to do his best as a father and that, despite the end of their marriage, he and his ex-wife support each other and are on good terms. "I am sharing this to prevent any misunderstandings that may arise in the future," he wrote. "I kindly ask that you refrain from personal questions, and I would be grateful if you continue to watch over me warmly."
Ko debuted with first-generation idol group Sechs Kies in 1997 and enjoyed wide popularity before retiring from the entertainment industry after the group disbanded.
He married physician Heo Yang-im in 2013 and welcomed a son the following year. Ko and Seung-jae appeared together on the KBS 2TV variety show "The Return of Superman," earning a large following.
Since his time on television, Ko has pursued a career as an entrepreneur. He has recently been engaging with fans through TikTok live broadcasts and has taken part in social contribution activities, including a project to support elderly people living alone.
