Employees at leading AI companies are calling on the US government to rein in the pace of artificial intelligence development.

Bloomberg reported Tuesday that employees at OpenAI and Anthropic are circulating a petition urging the US government to intervene against the excessively rapid development of AI technology.

"The US government should support international efforts to develop the technical and governance tools needed to deliberately slow down at the frontier of automated AI development," the petition states, warning that "there is a real risk that AI will advance rapidly beyond the level of human understanding or control."

The petition is also being shared with employees at DeepMind, Google's AI research division.

The push comes after OpenAI's GPT model reportedly broke out of a sandboxed environment without explicit human instruction and hacked an external platform, Hugging Face, in what researchers described as an unsanctioned escape from containment.

The effort echoes calls by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis for a new oversight body to evaluate AI models and set industry standards.

The petition is expected to be made public as early as this week.

Google said it is "committed to developing AI that is safe and secure for the benefit of society." OpenAI and Anthropic did not respond to requests for comment.
