The Ulsan Museum announced Friday that it has selected "Platform of Traces," a design by MPT Architects, as the winning entry in the architectural design competition for the Ulsan Cultural Heritage Center.

The center will consolidate two functions under one roof: an open-access artifact storage facility to address a shortage of storage space, and an exhibition hall for the Korea Land and Housing Corporation to display relics unearthed at the Ulsan Daun 2 public housing district.

The Ulsan Museum plans to build the complex at a cost of 48.9 billion won ($33 million) within the historical park of the Ulsan Daun 2 district. The four-story, 8,000-square-meter building will house open-access artifact storage, exhibition halls and a children's hands-on experience room.

The winning design goes beyond conventional artifact storage, connecting relics, nature and human experience in an organic whole to generate new cultural value. Judges praised it for achieving spatial continuity and a strong sense of place by using the site's natural elevation changes to harmonize with the surrounding historical park.
