Posco Group has established a dedicated manufacturing startup hub in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, aiming to support regional manufacturing ventures that have technology but struggle at the proof-of-concept and mass production stages — and to build a new-business ecosystem spanning advanced materials, energy and environmental sectors.

Posco Group said Wednesday it had opened the RIST Advanced Manufacturing Incubating Center in Pohang. The facility is South Korea's first dedicated manufacturing startup incubation hub, developed jointly by Posco Group, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, North Gyeongsang Province and Pohang city, drawing on the applied research capabilities of the Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (RIST).

The center spans 4,074 square meters across two above-ground floors and can accommodate up to 10 companies. Unlike a conventional office space, it provides infrastructure to support product validation and mass production readiness.

The facility is equipped with six categories of industrial gas and utility systems — including cooling water, compressed air, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen — serving as shared infrastructure for advanced materials, energy and environmental startups to validate prototypes and verify process conditions. RIST will provide support in testing and analysis, reliability evaluation and process design.

Manufacturing startups often hit cost and equipment barriers when moving from the research and development stage to actually producing a product and scaling up to mass production, even after their technology has been recognized. In the materials and energy sectors in particular, applying laboratory-level technology to an industrial setting takes considerable time, making access to proof-of-concept infrastructure a critical variable for growth.

Posco Group will offer resident companies full-cycle support covering venture scouting, research and development, equipment and process scale-up, commercialization and global market access. The Ministry of SMEs and Startups and North Gyeongsang Province will back the center's operations and company support programs.

The opening extends Posco Group's existing venture development platform, known as ChangeUp — an open innovation program through which the group works with universities, research institutes and regional ecosystems to scout, invest in and provide infrastructure support for venture companies.

Posco Group has been identifying promising companies with potential synergies with its core strategic businesses at an early stage and building business synergies through direct investment and research and development support. Through the new center, the group plans to help manufacturing ventures move beyond the laboratory stage and into actual industrialization.

Four startups have already moved into the center: Enforus, selected last year as the first company under Posco Holdings' planned startup program; Solarize; Vericore Materials; and EAFos.

Enforus holds technology for high-temperature electrolysis-based hydrogen production. Solarize is pursuing solar inverters, Vericore Materials eco-friendly coatings, and EAFos solvent extraction agents for secondary batteries. All four have received direct or indirect investment and research support from Posco Group.

The planned startup model involves identifying commercially promising technologies from Posco Group's research and development portfolio, then working with specialized startup institutions to design company formation and commercialization strategies in advance. The approach focuses on improving the odds of startup success by examining market viability and business structure from the earliest stage.

Pohang is a leading manufacturing city that grew on the back of steel but has recently been broadening its industrial portfolio into secondary battery materials, hydrogen and eco-friendly energy. Posco Group expects the center to drive growth among regional manufacturing ventures, create quality jobs and generate new business opportunities.
